From a distance, the tundra appears to be largely composed of gently rolling grassland. The grasses, however, are sedges--unstable clumps masking the muck of melted permafrost (in the summer) and dangerous ice-water-filled holes in melted ice wedges. They are the perfect home and breeding ground for millions of mosquitoes.
